What is Music Publishing?
If you compose music or write songs then you hold copyrights to your works and the subsequent use of them. Publishing your music ensures that all licenses of your copyrights are properly paid for. There are two types of copyright involved in music; the sound recording copyright (also known as the master copyright) and the songwriting copyright (also known as the publishing copyright). Typically a record company will sign the sound recording copyright and the songwriting copyright remains with the songwriter or composer. Publishing your music ensures that uses of the songwriting copyrights are paid for. Publishing income is generated from three main sources:
